Good morning Adventurers! Today we’re in Reyjkavík and we’re going to be trying four of Iceland’s most famous dishes. So it turns out that hot dogs are really popular here so we asked around on the Iceland subreddit and they recommended a place that’s name literally translates to “The Best in Town.” So, we’re gonna go see if it lives up to its name. Let’s go eat some Icelandic wieners guys! Okay, so they say that these are really good because, um, the main ingredient is lamb. They let them roam around freely and like, live a happy life, so, it makes extra yummy hot dogs for us. (laughs) They have like a mayo-ey sauce. It’s like remoulade. Yeah, remoulade. And, um, their own mustard.
There’s ketchup somewhere in there and then underneath, I think I got the right one, is crispy onions and raw onions.
That’s the traditional way to get it. Alright, let’s give it a try. It’s pretty good.
Yup, it’s good. I think, you know the hot dog is obviously, it’s good, there’s no doubt about that, but, you know the bun isn’t like the highest quality bun, and I always feel like, you know, the bun is half of what makes a really good hot dog, so… Yeah. I don’t know, I was kind of expecting more. Yeah. I don’t know if that’s sorry everyone, I know you’re gonna get really mad at me about that, but, it’s not that flavorful. Even with all the onions and the sauces and… On the plus side, it’s pretty much the most affordable meal in town. Oh my gosh. It’s literally half the price of anything we’ve seen anywhere else. Yeah. I think I ended up enjoying the hot dogs a little bit more than Allison did, but, I think if you come to Reyjkavík, I would give it a try, see what you think for yourself. Because they were definitely really good, but they weren’t, they didn’t blow us away or anything. But worth trying. OK, so the next two dishes we’re gonna try are more, um, traditional dishes. One is a lamb stew and the other one is dried fish, I think it’s gonna be kind of like fish jerky? You dip in butter. But these were also recommended to us, uh, by Redditors. So thank you to the fine people of Reddit for the suggestions.
Yes! Yeah, and uh, if it’s gross then we’re coming for you. By the way, we’re not exactly sure how to pronounce a lot of these dishes, so we’re not even gonna try. Instead, we’ll put the proper names to ’em in the description below. The food has arrived and looks very interesting. Yeah. So, bonus! This place, when you get the, uh, dried fish, it comes with the fermented shark which is also a dish here that people recommended. Yeah. But we didn’t think we were gonna get to try, but… Oh my god. It feels like wallpaper. (laughs) OK, so I read that you dip it in the butter, and then you just let it melt in your mouth. It tastes like… Buttery white fish. Are you supposed to chew on it? I think so. It does dissolve, though, right? Surprisingly.
Yeah. It’s kinda good.
Mmhmm. It’s like a weird, kinda jerky or something.
Yeah. The butter is key though, because this on its own is extremely dry. I don’t know if you guys can tell but it’s very dried out, it’s like paper. Yeah, look at this. It’s kind of good though, I like it. It’s like a little snack or something. Yeah, very unique.
Not too bad. Ooh, that’s really good.
Is it? Yeah. The meat just kind of falls apart. It’s really salty, it’s got tons of flavor. Salty in a good way. But, it really reminds me of, uh, when we had goulash in Budapest. Yeah, yeah yeah. Last, but not least, we’re gonna try the shark. Check it out. It doesn’t look that threatening in the jar, but, I have a feeling it’s going to be, uh, Interesting. Whoa, that’s weird. It’s like, ammonia? Is that what it is? Doesn’t smell good.
(laughs) You know when I saw that the menu said you only get six bites of it, I was like, “Well that’s kind of a rip off!” But now I’m thinking we could’ve gotten away with two bites! Alright.
Down the hatch. Does it taste as bad as it smells? Definitely not. I don’t, I don’t love it.
(laughs) It’s, um, it has a little bit of the aftertaste of the smell, but, it’s kind of buttery, not as chewy as I thought it would be. Fishy, yup. It’s, it’s interesting. I wouldn’t say it tastes good.
No. But not as bad as you thought.
It tastes better than it smells. I’d say that. (laughs)
Leaves a bad taste in your mouth, though. Get that outta here. Take off! I’m stuck! Something, oh, there’s a pole up my ass. It’s about dinner time, so next up we’re gonna try something that is apparently a traditional Icelandic dish. It’s, uh, I can’t really pronounce it but it’s a boiled sheep’s head. Yeah.
And it is exactly what it sounds like. Now we had a hard time finding a place to get it at. I think there’s only one place in the city according to the internet, that you can get it, and it’s at this bus station.
Yeah. Which sounds a little seedy and it has mixed reviews, so we don’t have crazy high hopes, but we really wanna give it a try before we leave, so we’re gonna head there now. But, the reason they only have it, or it’s the only place that has it is because typically you only eat this once a year for like, around a holiday or a festival or something like that.
Yeah. Um, so, we did some research and this, yeah, everyone kept saying this is only place to get it in the off season, so, We’ll see!
Wish us luck! Guys, the cook just told us that they’ve been selling these sheep’s head here for like, forty years. We were just talking to him about how many sheeps that is. We said it’s enough to fill Reykjavík. It’s a lot of sheep. (laughs) Perfect! Thank you! Wow! This is, uh… Amazing.
I don’t really have any words for it. It’s uh… It’s a boiled sheep’s head. Right there. It’s bigger than I thought it would be. It’s huge man! I mean, it’s like a whole sheep’s head… Down the hatch! It’s really not that bad.
No? Yeah! It’s like, it’s really, chewy and thick tasting.
Yeah. Poor guy, he still has teeth.
Poor bastard. Oh god… Go for it.
Don’t think, just do. (laughs)
Don’t make that face! Is it bad? I don’t like it.
You don’t like it? No…
I didn’t think it was that bad. I don’t think I can look at it anymore.
(laughs) It’s really creeping me out. We just ate his face off. (laughs) His tongue is in there, I think.
Yeah, there’s his tongue, look! This is the tongue. Doesn’t look that bad. It’s a little off, yeah, it’s a little off. It’s a got a little gross texture.
Oh no! The texture of a tongue.
Oh god! Woo! I don’t know if I can finish the tongue, but… I really can’t eat anymore.
Eric’s still trying. I’m debating on whether I’m going to try the eyeball or not. Oh my god… Tastes like you’d think an eyeball would taste. No, it doesn’t. I don’t know. It just tastes like meat.
Is it slimy? Ah, it wasn’t that slimy. It’s kind of chewy. Just tastes like meat, I’d say. We’re gonna take a little look at the back side. See what’s under the hood. Gosh!
Wow. This looks like I’m in science class! Dude, that is so gross man. That’s where the brain goes. Oh no.
Oh yeah, at least they take the brain out, so…
Yeah. Well there you have it. We both feel, I feel a little sick after that. Like, it’s not, I didn’t really think it tasted that bad, but, my body just wants to be sick after like, looking at it made me sick. It made me sick to my stomach before I even ate it. Alright, I mean I’m sure this is, I’m sure there are much better versions out there, like homemade versions, but, and I thought the shark was bad earlier. The fermented shark. But this… It one-upped it. Yeah, definitely. But I think we’re gonna leave you guys right here. If you enjoyed this video, make sure you hit the Subscribe button. Share it.
