Today, Kaneohe is mostly a residential community, with very little agriculture in evidence. Features of note are Hoomaluhia Botanical Garden and the new Hawaii National Veterans Cemetery. Access to Kaneohe Bay is mainly from the public pier and boat ramp located at nearby Heeia Kea. Access to Coconut Island (restricted) is from the state pier off Lilipuna Road. Marine Corps Base Hawaii lies across the south end of Kaneohe Bay from the central part of Kaneohe, although the town stretches along Kaneohe Bay Drive to the base perimeter.

There are three golf courses in Kaneohe: Pali Golf Course (public), Koolau Golf Club (privately owned but open to the public), and Bay view Golf Park (privately owned but open to the public). Koolaupoko is a district within the City & County of Honolulu on the island of Oahu, State of Hawaii.  In Hawaiian, koolau poko means "short windward", referring to the fact that this is the shorter of the two windward districts on the island (Koolauloa or "long windward" is the other). Included within the district are the largest windward towns of Kaneohe, Kailua, and Waimanalo—places discussed in separate articles. North Koolaupoko, a census-designated place (CDP), is the more rural part of the District, extending northwestward from Kahaluu.

Marine Corps Base Hawaii (MCBH), formerly Kaneohe Marine Corps Air Station (KMCAS), is a U.S. Marine Corps base facility and air station located on the Mokapu Peninsula of windward City & County of Honolulu. As of the 2000 Census, the base had a total population of 11,827. Marine Corps Base Hawaii, Kaneohe Bay is home to Marines, Sailors, family members and civilian employees. The United States Marine Corps operates a 7,800 foot runway at the base. MCBH is home for the 3rd Marine Regiment and Marine Aircraft Group 24 and 3rd Radio Battalion.

The base lies between the two largest windward O'ahu communities of Kailua and Kāne'ohe and the main gate is reached at the eastern end of Interstate H-3. The main access to the base is by either highway 3 (H-3) or by Mokapu Road. MCB Hawaii is located on the windward side of Oahu, approximately 12 miles northeast of Honolulu. Marine Corps Base Hawaii, occupies the entire Mokapu Peninsula, of 2,951 acres. Two areas of the base are classified conservation land which includes the Ulupau Crater area (north east peninsula) and the Nuupia Pond area (at the Mokapu Road).
